Michael Monsos

Michael Monsos is Professor of Scenic Design and Technology at the University of Montana.

He has designed and consulted for regional theatres, including the Idaho Repertory Theatre, Arizona Broadway Theatre, Missoula Children’s Theatre, and the Bigfork Summer Playhouse. He has participated in numerous study tours in Europe including Romania, Hungary, and Greece, and led a study tour of historic theatres and architecture through Germany and the Czech Republic.

Professor Monsos has been a contributing author for books such as, Late & Great: American Designers 1960–2010, published by Broadway Press and the United States Institute of Theatre Technology (USITT), and World Scenography 1990–2005, Vol 2, published by OISTAT. His article on historic theatres in Utah was published in the journal Theatre Design & Technology and he authored the resource guide, A Handbook on the Preservation and Restoration of Historic Theatres. Professor Monsos recently completed writing the third edition of Stock Scenery Construction, originally authored by Bill Raoul. He is active in USITT, for which he has served on the Board of Directors and on the Publications, International, and Conference committees. Professor Monsos also served as the project manager in charge of construction for the United States’ exhibits in the 2011 Prague Quadrennial.

Professor Monsos serves NAST as a visiting evaluator and was first elected to the Board of Directors in 2019.

He holds a Master of Science degree in Architectural Studies (History and Preservation) from the University of Utah, as well as Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Scenery and Lighting Design from the University of Montana.
