Jonathan R. Michaelsen

Jonathan R. Michaelsen is Chair of the Department of Theatre, Drama, and Contemporary Dance at Indiana University (IU) and Producing Artistic Director of the Indiana Festival Theatre and Premiere Musicals: Developing New Works of Musical Theatre at Indiana University. Before coming to IU, he was Associate Dean for Humanities and Fine Arts at the University of Alabama. He also served as head of the graduate and undergraduate Acting programs in the Department of Theatre and Dance for 10 years.

Professor Michaelsen has directed and acted in numerous professional and collegiate productions, including Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Love’s Labour’s Lost, King Lear, Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, Sweeney Todd, Angels in America, and Uncle Vanya. He has had four productions selected for presentation at regional American College Theatre Festivals, with the world premiere production of Southern Girls receiving national recognition. He has also directed Monteverdi’s opera, L’Orfeo, for the Bloomington Early Music Festival and the Jacobs School of Music at IU.

Active in the Southeastern Theatre Conference, Professor Michaelsen served on the Executive Committee and as President. He was awarded a teaching grant for the development of theatre curricula for secondary school educators, and received a Druid Arts Educator of the Year Award. He also received a state of Alabama arts award for his contributions to theatre.

He was first elected to the Commission on Accreditation in 2015. He previously served NAST as Treasurer from 2009 to 2015.

Professor Michaelsen holds a Master of Fine Arts in Acting from Florida State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from the University of California, Irvine.
