Wendy R. Coleman

Wendy R. Coleman is the Dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Alabama State University, receiving this appointment in January 2021. She previously served for eight years as Chair of the Department of Theatre Arts and as a member of the faculty. She also served for ten years as Director of Theatre at Albany State University in Georgia.

Dean Coleman has published works in several genres, including the novels The Man of God and Umuji’s Servant, the plays Born Again: The Rebirth of a Nation, But Satin Sheets Slide: A Play About Relationships, If You Live Long Enough, We the People, Africa To America, In God’s House, and Abundant and Clear: The Stories of Five Good Black Men. Her work as a writer has been featured in Essence, as well as in the journal Theatre Topics. She has been recognized as one of Southwest Georgia’s “40 Under 40” and as one of Alabama State University’s 50 Under 50 Distinguished Alumni. Dean Coleman has directed, performed, and presented in several states, as well as internationally.

Dean Coleman serves NAST as a Visiting Evaluator. She has served as a past member of the Committee on Nominations.

Dean Coleman holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Theatre and Dramaturgy from Florida State University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre from Alabama State University.
